Differences Between Botox Products
Those unfamiliar with Botox may not realize that Botox did not begin as simply a cosmetic, anti-aging product. With a history of medical use dating back to the late 1960s, Botox products have been used not only to treat wrinkles, but also for other, more serious medical conditions.
Botox for Spasticity
Brentwood residents with muscle spasticity are amongst those non-cosmetic patients who seek out the help of Botox injections. “Spasticity” is a disorder of the central nervous system, where muscles spasm uncontrollably.
Cervical dystonia has been treated successfully with Botox injections in Brentwood and elsewhere for many years. Cervical dystonia, also known by its scientific name spasmodic torticollis, is a spasm within the neck muscles that causes the head to jerk to one side, forward, or backward without control.
Another spasmodic disorder treatable with Botox is blepharospasm, an abnormal contraction of the eyelid. For most people who suffer from blepharospasm, the eyelid twitching is a chronic problem that lasts a lifetime. Sometimes the twitching is so severe that it causes functional blindness. People suffering from the disorder feel as though their eyes clamp shut, and will not reopen without tremendous effort.
Botox injections successfully stop these spasms for 60 – 70 days at a time. Although the results of Botox treatments will naturally vary from patient to patient, many Botox Brentwood patients treating spasms with Botox injections will experience some relief of their symptoms.
Botox for Excessive Sweating
Another surprising application of Botox is severe sweating. People with the condition known as hyperhidrosis experience sweating that goes beyond what the body actually needs in order to regulate body temperature. Certain foods and drinks may trigger the condition, but the primary cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown.
For some people with hyperhidrosis, the excessive sweating occurs throughout the body. For other people, the sweating is constrained to a certain body part, such as the hands, feet, groin, or underarms. Understandably, this condition can present an embarrassing problem, a problem which no amount of deodorant or anti-perspirant can stop.
Botox, however, can stop hyperhidrosis. A Botox injection will temporarily block chemical signals from the nerves that start the sweating.
Some patients worry that using Botox injections to stop sweat might be dangerous, but in fact it is quite safe. The Botox injection only affects the sweat gland that it's injected into; sweating throughout the rest of the body continues as normal. Rather than the sweat getting “backed up” or clogging the gland, Botox stops the sweat from being produced in the first place. Have questions? Botox for Cosmetic Purposes
Most Brentwood Botox users, and in fact the majority of Botox users in the United States, utilize Botox injections not for serious medical issues such as those mentioned above, but to treat moderate to severe wrinkles.
No matter how Botox is used, whether for medical or cosmetic purposes, its basic method of operation is the same. A neurotoxin that was originally discovered in the late nineteenth century, patients receiving a Botox injection have just a small amount injected under the surface of the skin. In all cases, Botox temporarily blocks nervous system signals. In the case of Botox Cosmetic, the Botox injections block nerve impulses that cause moderate to severe frown lines and other wrinkles. As a result, the Botox injection leaves the patient with smoother, younger-looking skin.
